Artificial intelligence is changing what's possible for people with disabilities. That sentence has been said a lot, often by people selling something. This guide is different. It is written for you, not for a technology investor or a government committee. It is practical, specific, and honest about what these tools can and cannot do.
This guide covers AI tools that are available in 2026. Many are free. Most work on devices you already own. The goal is not to overwhelm you with options. The goal is to help you find the tools that match your specific situation and give you a real starting point.
You do not need to be a technology expert to use these tools. You do not need expensive equipment. What you need is a clear sense of what problem you want to solve and a willingness to experiment with one tool at a time.
Living with a disability often means solving problems that other people do not even notice. Getting through a phone call. Reading a document that was never designed to be readable. Writing an email when your hands or brain are not cooperating. Navigating a transit system that assumes everyone moves the same way. These are not small inconveniences. They are daily barriers that take real time and real energy.
AI tools will not eliminate systemic barriers. Organizations still need to meet their accessibility obligations. Governments still need to fund accessible services. But while we wait for those systems to catch up, AI tools can help you get things done, maintain independence, and reduce the daily cost of navigating an inaccessible world.
This guide is organized by category. Each section covers what the tools are, who benefits most, specific tool names to try, and practical advice for getting started. You do not need to read it cover to cover. Jump to the section that matches your most pressing need.

Voice and Speech AI
What It Is
Voice and speech AI covers two main categories: tools that listen to your voice and do things with it, and tools that speak back to you. In practice, these categories overlap considerably. Your phone's voice assistant both listens and speaks. A transcription app listens and produces text. A screen reader reads text aloud.
This section focuses on tools that respond to voice commands and tools that convert speech to text. Screen readers are covered briefly here but are a specialized field with their own community and expertise.
Voice Assistants
Voice assistants are AI systems you can speak to in natural language. They respond to questions, control devices, set reminders, make calls, send messages, play music, and much more. The three most widely used are Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa.
Siri comes built into iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. You activate it by saying 'Hey Siri' or pressing a button. Siri is deeply integrated with Apple's operating system, which means it can control accessibility settings, read notifications aloud, and work with other Apple accessibility features. For iPhone users, Siri is often the easiest starting point because it requires no additional setup.
Google Assistant is available on Android phones, Google Nest speakers, and through the Google app on iOS. It is particularly strong for search, navigation, and controlling smart home devices. Google Assistant can read your messages, set alarms, answer questions, and control compatible apps by voice.
Amazon Alexa lives primarily in Amazon Echo smart speakers and displays. It is especially useful for home control: turning lights on and off, locking doors, adjusting thermostats, and operating compatible appliances. For people with mobility disabilities or chronic fatigue, controlling your home by voice can significantly reduce the physical effort required to manage your environment.
All three voice assistants can make phone calls, send texts, set timers and reminders, play audiobooks and podcasts, answer factual questions, and control compatible smart home devices. The choice between them often comes down to what devices you already own.
Who Benefits Most from Voice Assistants
Voice assistants are particularly valuable for people with mobility disabilities, limb differences, or upper limb impairments that make typing difficult or impossible. They are also helpful for people with chronic fatigue conditions such as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, or long COVID, where conserving energy is a daily priority. People with low vision or blindness also benefit, though dedicated screen readers offer more comprehensive support for reading text.
Voice assistants are less reliable for people with speech differences. Voice recognition technology has improved significantly but still struggles with accents, dysarthria, aphasia, and other speech variations. If standard voice recognition does not work well for your speech pattern, there are specialized tools discussed later in this section.
Setting Up a Voice Assistant
On an iPhone, open Settings, scroll to Siri and Search, and enable 'Listen for Hey Siri.' You will be prompted to say a few phrases so the system learns your voice. Once set up, you can activate Siri hands-free at any time.
On an Android phone, open the Google app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Voice, and ensure 'Hey Google' detection is enabled. Follow the prompts to train the voice model.
For Amazon Echo, the device is ready to use as soon as it is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. Say 'Alexa' to wake it. The Alexa app on your phone lets you configure skills (add-ons that extend functionality) and connect smart home devices.
Voice-to-Text Tools
Voice-to-text tools, also called speech-to-text or dictation tools, convert your spoken words into written text. This is different from a voice assistant: you are not giving commands, you are dictating. The output is text that you can then edit, send, or use however you need.
Whisper is an AI transcription model developed by OpenAI. It is widely considered one of the most accurate speech-to-text tools available. Whisper is the engine behind many other apps and services. It handles accents and background noise well and supports many languages. The base Whisper model is free and open source. Various apps and services use Whisper to power their transcription features.
Google Docs Voice Typing is built into Google Docs (which is free with a Google account). Open a Google Doc, click Tools, then Voice Typing, and click the microphone icon to start dictating. It is accurate, handles punctuation commands, and works in a browser on any computer. It is particularly useful for longer documents.
Otter.ai is a transcription service that does more than just convert speech to text. It creates searchable transcripts, identifies different speakers, and can connect to Zoom and Google Meet to transcribe meetings automatically. There is a free tier providing 300 minutes of transcription per month, but check the other limits before you rely on it: individual conversations are capped at 30 minutes, and file imports are limited. For a long lecture or a full medical appointment, the per-conversation cap will stop you before the monthly total does. Otter.ai is available as a web service and as a mobile app.
Built-in dictation is also available on most devices without any additional apps. On iPhone and iPad, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard to dictate in any text field. On Android, tap the microphone on the Gboard keyboard. On Mac, press the Fn key twice to activate dictation. On Windows, press Windows+H to open dictation.
Hands-Free Device Control
Beyond voice assistants, there are more comprehensive hands-free control systems that allow you to operate your entire computer or phone by voice.
Apple Switch Control allows complete device control through a single switch, a head movement, or other custom inputs. It is built into iPhone, iPad, and Mac and can be found in Accessibility settings.
Voice Control (Apple) lets you operate your iPhone, iPad, or Mac entirely by voice. It goes beyond Siri: you can dictate text, navigate by saying element names or numbers, and control any app. Enable it in Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control.
Voice Access (Google/Android) is the Android equivalent, allowing full device control by voice. Enable it in Settings, Accessibility, Voice Access. On Pixel phones it is pre-installed; on other Android phones you may need to download it from the Play Store.
Dragon Professional is a premium dictation and voice control tool for Windows and Mac. It is significantly more accurate than built-in tools, especially for medical and legal terminology. Dragon has versions designed for healthcare, law, and general professional use. It is expensive but may be covered through provincial assistive technology funding programs.
In Canada, provincial assistive technology programs may fund voice control software for people with qualifying disabilities. Contact your provincial government's accessibility or disability services office to learn about what is available in your province.
Getting Started with Voice Tools
If voice tools are new to you, start with the dictation feature on your existing phone. Tap the microphone on your keyboard and dictate a short text message or email. That single experiment tells you a lot: how accurate the recognition is for your voice, how comfortable you are speaking rather than typing, and whether this approach is worth exploring further.
If built-in dictation works reasonably well, try Google Docs Voice Typing for longer writing tasks. If you attend a lot of meetings, try Otter.ai’s free tier to see if automatic transcription is useful, keeping the 30-minute-per-conversation cap in mind.
If built-in recognition struggles with your speech, Whisper-based tools may do better. Apps like Whisper Transcription (iOS) or WhisperKit implement the Whisper model and may handle speech differences more reliably than default phone dictation.
Image and Visual Description AI
What It Is
Image description AI analyses photographs, documents, and visual scenes and produces text descriptions of what they contain. For blind and low-vision users, this technology can provide access to visual information that would otherwise require sighted assistance.
These tools range from apps that describe a single photo to comprehensive visual AI assistants that can read printed text, identify products by their packaging, describe a person's surroundings, and answer specific questions about what a camera is pointed at.
Be My Eyes
Be My Eyes is a free app that connects blind and low-vision users with sighted volunteers for live visual assistance. You open the app, start a video call, and a volunteer sees your camera feed and describes what they see. This service has been running since 2015 and has a large volunteer community.
Be My Eyes has added an AI feature called Be My AI, powered by AI image analysis. Instead of waiting for a volunteer, you can instantly send a photo and receive a detailed description generated by AI. The AI feature is available 24 hours a day, responds in seconds, and can handle nuanced questions such as 'What does this warning label say?' or 'Is this shirt blue or navy?'
Be My Eyes is available on iOS and Android. The AI feature is included in the free version. The app is available in Canada and supports Canadian French as well as English.
Seeing AI
Seeing AI is a free app developed by Microsoft, available on both iOS and Android (it came to Android in December 2023). It has multiple channels, each optimized for a different visual task. The Short Text channel reads small pieces of text aloud as soon as your camera focuses on them, without requiring you to tap. This is useful for reading labels, signs, and short printed text in real time.
The Document channel handles longer text, such as letters or printed forms, and reads them in a structured way. The Product channel reads barcodes to identify products and read their nutritional information. The Person channel describes people in the frame, including estimated emotional expression. The Scene channel provides a general description of your surroundings.
Seeing AI is particularly strong for Canadian users because it handles English and French and works well with common Canadian document formats.
Google Lookout
Google Lookout is a free app for Android that provides real-time visual assistance. It can describe your surroundings, read text, scan documents, identify currency, and provide exploration mode where it describes nearby items as you move your camera around.
Lookout works continuously in the background: you do not need to take a photo and wait. It announces what it sees as you move through a space, making it useful for navigating unfamiliar environments.
Apple Image Descriptions
Apple's iPhone and iPad can automatically generate descriptions for photos in your camera roll. In the Photos app, tap on any image, then swipe up to see a description generated by the on-device AI. VoiceOver (Apple's built-in screen reader) will also read these descriptions aloud.
When you receive an image in Messages or see a photo in a web page, VoiceOver can describe it. This happens automatically when accessibility features are enabled. The quality of descriptions has improved substantially over recent iOS versions.
AI Chatbots for Image Description
General AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT can also describe images. If you take a photo and upload it to the Claude or ChatGPT app (both available on iOS and Android), you can ask specific questions about it: 'What does this document say?', 'What colour is the shirt on the left?', 'Is this a stop sign?'. These tools are not optimized for real-time use the way dedicated apps are, but they can be useful for complex images where a more nuanced description is needed.
Who Benefits Most from Visual Description AI
People who are blind, have low vision, or are deafblind benefit most directly from these tools. They also have applications for people with cognitive disabilities who process text more easily than images, and for people with print disabilities who have difficulty reading physical text.
These tools are not perfect. AI image descriptions can be wrong, especially with complex scenes, handwritten text, or poor lighting. For important decisions (such as verifying the dose on a medication label), use Be My Eyes with a human volunteer rather than relying solely on AI. For everyday tasks, the AI features are fast, private, and require no waiting.
Getting Started with Visual AI
Download Seeing AI from the App Store or Google Play; it is on both platforms. It is free. Spend ten minutes exploring its channels. The Short Text channel for reading physical text is often the feature that provides the most immediate day-to-day value.
If you use Android, download Google Lookout from the Play Store. It is also free. Try the Explore mode in a room at home to get a sense of how it describes your surroundings.
AI Captioning and Transcription
What It Is
Captioning AI converts spoken audio into text captions displayed on screen. Transcription AI does the same thing but produces a text document rather than on-screen captions. Both use the same underlying speech recognition technology, but they serve different purposes: captions are for real-time comprehension during a conversation or video, while transcription is for later review and reference.
These tools have improved dramatically in the past few years. Automatic captions are now accurate enough to be genuinely useful in most situations, though they still struggle with strong accents, technical terminology, and cross-talk between multiple speakers.
Live Captions in Video Calls
Google Meet provides live captions for all video calls. Click the three dots menu during a call and select Turn On Captions. Captions appear at the bottom of the screen as each person speaks. Google Meet is free with a Google account.
Zoom AI Captions are available with Zoom. The host needs to enable captions for the meeting. Once enabled, participants can turn them on by clicking the CC button in the toolbar. Zoom also offers a transcription feature that saves a text record of the meeting.
Microsoft Teams provides live captions in meetings. Click the three dots menu (More options) and select Turn On Live Captions. Teams also integrates with AI features that can summarize meetings after they end.
Apple FaceTime does not offer built-in captions, but Apple's Live Captions feature (available on iPhone 11 and later, and on Mac) can caption FaceTime calls as well as any other audio on your device.
Apple Live Captions
Apple Live Captions is a system-wide feature that captions any audio playing on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It works across FaceTime, phone calls, videos, podcasts, and anything else that produces audio. On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings, Accessibility, Live Captions, and toggle it on. A caption window appears automatically when audio is detected.
Apple Live Captions works entirely on-device on newer iPhones (iPhone 12 and later). This means your conversations are not sent to a server. This is a significant privacy advantage for people who want captions without transmitting their conversations to the cloud.
Otter.ai for Transcription
Otter.ai, introduced in the voice section, is worth revisiting here for its transcription features. Otter can record and transcribe meetings, conversations, lectures, and interviews. It identifies different speakers and labels each speaker's sections, making transcripts easier to navigate. It can connect directly to Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams to automatically join and transcribe meetings.
The free tier includes 300 minutes a month, but each single conversation is capped at 30 minutes and file imports are limited. That per-conversation cap matters more than the monthly one if you are recording lectures, long appointments or meetings. Otter is available as a web app and as an iOS and Android app. Transcripts are searchable and shareable.
Whisper-Based Tools
OpenAI's Whisper model powers many third-party transcription apps. Whisper is notable for handling accents, background noise, and non-standard speech better than most alternatives. For people whose speech is not well-recognized by standard tools, Whisper-based apps are worth trying.
Whisper Transcription (iOS App Store) and other Whisper-based apps are available. Some run the model locally on your device, which provides strong privacy. Others send audio to a server for processing. Check the privacy policy if this matters to you.
Transcribing Pre-Recorded Video and Audio
You do not need live captions if you are watching a video you can pause. YouTube automatically generates captions for most videos. If auto-generated captions are poor, try enabling them anyway and use the playback speed controls to slow the video down, which can improve comprehension even with imperfect captions.
For videos that do not have captions, tools like Otter.ai and various Whisper-based apps can process audio files. Upload the audio and receive a text transcript. This is particularly useful for online courses, recorded lectures, and training videos that were never captioned.
Who Benefits Most from Captioning AI
Deaf and hard of hearing users benefit most directly. Captioning also helps people with auditory processing disorder (APD), people who are learning English as a second language, people in noisy environments, and anyone who retains information better by reading than by listening.
For Deaf users who use American Sign Language (ASL) or Quebec Sign Language (LSQ), captions are a supplement to, not a replacement for, ASL/LSQ interpretation. AI captioning cannot replace sign language interpreters for Deaf people whose primary language is a signed language.
Getting Started with Captioning
If you use an iPhone 12 or later, enable Apple Live Captions in Settings, Accessibility. Try it on your next phone call or video. Because it works on-device, there is no setup beyond toggling it on, and it respects your privacy.
If you attend regular video meetings, check whether your platform offers built-in captions before downloading additional apps. Google Meet and Zoom captions are available in the free versions of those services and require no additional tools.
AI Writing and Communication Assistants
What It Is
AI writing tools help with the mechanics and structure of written communication. Some correct grammar and improve clarity. Others help you generate drafts of emails, letters, and forms when starting from scratch is difficult. This category has seen some of the most rapid development in recent years.
Writing difficulties are common across many disability categories: cognitive disabilities that affect processing and organization, learning disabilities like dyslexia, communication differences, brain injuries, and fatigue conditions where the mental energy required for writing is simply not available.
Grammar and Plain Language AI
Grammarly checks spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style as you write. It works in most web browsers as an extension and integrates with Microsoft Word. The free version catches the most common errors. The paid version adds style suggestions and a tone detector. Grammarly is widely used and integrates with most platforms where you type online.
LanguageTool is an open-source alternative to Grammarly that works well in both English and French. It has a browser extension, a web editor, and integrations with LibreOffice and Microsoft Word. The free version is capable and the paid version adds more advanced suggestions. LanguageTool is a good choice for Canadian users who write in both English and French.
Both tools flag potential errors as you type. Neither requires you to write a full document before getting feedback. This real-time feedback is particularly helpful for people with learning disabilities who benefit from immediate error correction.
AI Drafting Assistants
General-purpose AI tools (sometimes called large language models or LLMs) can write first drafts of documents based on your instructions. You describe what you need and the AI produces a starting point that you edit. For people who find blank-page starts difficult, this can be transformative.
Claude (Anthropic) can be accessed at claude.ai. It is strong for writing tasks that require nuance, tone management, and following specific instructions. The free tier is capable for most purposes. Claude is particularly good at adjusting reading level, producing plain language versions of complex documents, and maintaining consistent voice across a longer piece of writing.
ChatGPT (OpenAI) is available at chat.openai.com. It is widely used and has a large base of users with documented tips and techniques. The free version uses the GPT-5-mini model; the paid version uses GPT-5 and includes additional features. ChatGPT is strong for a wide variety of writing tasks.
Microsoft Copilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote). If you use Microsoft Office, Copilot can draft emails in Outlook, generate document drafts in Word, and summarize Teams meetings. Copilot requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. For people already using Office, it is the most smoothly integrated option.
What These Tools Can Write for You
Emails to government agencies and service providers can be drafted by describing the situation and what you need. Forms that ask open-ended questions about your needs or experience can be approached the same way. Letters requesting workplace accommodations, appeals of insurance decisions, and complaints to regulatory bodies all benefit from AI drafting assistance.
The key technique is specificity. Instead of asking 'Write me an email to my landlord,' ask 'Write a professional but firm email to my property manager explaining that the accessible parking spot I was promised has been occupied by another tenant for three weeks, and requesting that the issue be resolved by a specific date.' More detail produces a more useful draft.
These tools also help with reorganising and simplifying your own writing. If you have notes or rough points you want to communicate but cannot organise them into a coherent message, paste them into Claude or ChatGPT and ask for help. You are not starting from scratch; you are using AI to organise your own thinking.
For Fatigue Conditions
For people with conditions that cause cognitive fatigue, ME/CFS, long COVID, multiple sclerosis, and others, AI writing assistance can dramatically reduce the cognitive cost of communication. Composing a careful email to a specialist, writing a detailed insurance appeal, or preparing questions for a medical appointment all require sustained mental effort that is a finite resource.
Using AI to produce a first draft, then reviewing and editing it, requires much less cognitive energy than writing from nothing. The review-and-edit approach plays to the relative strength of recognition over generation: it is almost always easier to recognize when something sounds right than to produce it from scratch.
Who Benefits Most from Writing AI
People with cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, acquired brain injuries, autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, fatigue conditions, and communication differences all benefit from writing AI. So do people whose first language is not the language they need to write in.
People with physical disabilities affecting their hands also benefit: dictating your thoughts to an AI and then having it produce a draft is faster than typing when typing is physically difficult or painful.
Getting Started with Writing AI
Visit claude.ai and create a free account. Think of one communication task you find difficult or exhausting. That is your starting task. Describe the situation and what you want to say, and see what the AI produces. Your first session will tell you a lot about whether this approach works for you.
If you already use Microsoft Office regularly, look into Microsoft Copilot. It lives inside tools you already know, which lowers the learning curve.
AI for AAC and Communication Support
What Is AAC
AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication. It covers the full range of tools and strategies that support communication for people who cannot rely solely on speech. AAC ranges from low-tech tools like communication boards to high-tech systems with eye-tracking, switch access, and AI-generated speech.
AI is changing AAC in significant ways. Prediction algorithms that suggest the next word or phrase have become much more accurate and personalised. AI-generated speech voices have become natural-sounding enough that many AAC users find them acceptable as their communication voice. Some systems can learn your vocabulary and communication patterns over time.
AI Word and Phrase Prediction
Modern AAC apps use AI to predict what you are trying to say based on context, not just the letter you just typed. If you type 'I need' in a medical setting, the predictions differ from 'I need' in a social setting. Contextual prediction reduces the number of taps required to compose a message.
Snap Core First is a widely used AAC app that uses AI-driven vocabulary organization and prediction. It is available on iPad and Windows and is used across age groups. It supports switch access and eye tracking.
TouchChat is another established AAC app with AI word prediction. It works on iOS and Android devices.
Proloquo4Text is a text-based AAC app from AssistiveWare for people who use spelling-based communication. It has strong AI word prediction and works on iOS.
AAC technology is a specialised field. If you are new to AAC or exploring AAC for someone in your family, working with an augmentative communication specialist (often an SLP with AAC specialisation) is the best starting point. Your provincial health system may cover an assessment.
AI-Generated Speech Voices
One area where AI has made a meaningful difference is in the quality of synthesised speech voices used in AAC systems. Older synthesised voices (robotic-sounding text-to-speech) have been replaced in modern systems by AI voices that sound more natural and expressive.
Some services allow AAC users to create a personalised voice based on their own voice recordings. This is particularly significant for people who are losing their voice to a degenerative condition such as ALS or Parkinson's disease.
VocaliD is a service that creates custom AI voices from voice samples. If you have some usable speech, VocaliD can create a synthetic version of your voice for use in an AAC device.
Acapela Group provides natural-sounding synthetic voices in multiple languages, including Canadian French, used in various AAC systems.
Text-Based Communication
Not all communication support involves dedicated AAC devices. Many people use text messaging, email, and messaging apps as their primary communication channel. AI writing tools (covered in the previous section) directly support text-based communicators by reducing the effort of composition.
For people who type slowly or with difficulty, tools that expand short phrases into full sentences can help. Text expansion apps like TypeIt4Me (Mac/iOS) allow you to define shortcuts that expand into full phrases. Combined with AI prediction, this can make text communication much faster.
Getting Started with AAC and AI
If you are already an AAC user, ask your SLP or AT specialist about whether your current system has AI features that you are not using. Many AAC apps have received significant AI updates in recent years, and your existing device may have new capabilities.
If you are a text communicator exploring AI support, the writing tools covered in the previous section are your most accessible starting point. Claude, ChatGPT, and similar tools require no special hardware.
Navigation and Mobility AI
What It Is
Navigation AI helps people plan and execute journeys, whether on foot, by transit, or by vehicle. For people with mobility disabilities, the most critical feature is accessibility information: which routes have step-free access, where accessible parking is located, how far the walk from a transit stop to the destination is, and whether real-time accessible transit is available.
Google Maps Accessibility Features
Google Maps has become one of the more useful navigation tools for people with mobility disabilities, largely because of its wheelchair-accessible route feature. When you search for directions, you can request a wheelchair-accessible route. Maps will filter out routes with stairs, steep grades, and other barriers, and will show which transit options are accessible.
In Canadian cities, the quality of this data varies. Major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa have reasonably complete accessibility data. Smaller cities and rural areas have less complete information. You can contribute to improving the data by reporting accessibility issues or confirming accessible features you have found.
Google Maps also shows whether specific businesses have accessible entrances, accessible washrooms, and accessible parking. This information comes from user reports and is not always current or accurate. Use it as a starting point and verify when it matters.
Apple Maps Accessibility
Apple Maps has added accessibility routing features, though coverage in Canada is less complete than Google Maps. The app can show accessible transit options and wheelchair-friendly pedestrian routes in supported areas. Coverage is improving with each update.
Transit-Specific Apps
Transit is a Canadian transit app that aggregates real-time data from transit agencies across North America. It covers most major Canadian cities and shows real-time arrivals, trip planning, and service alerts. Transit can filter for accessible routes and shows whether specific vehicles are accessible.
Moovit is another transit app with accessibility features, available in most Canadian cities. It provides trip planning with options to filter for accessible routes and notes the accessibility of individual stops.
Autonomous Navigation and AI Canes
More experimental navigation technologies exist for blind and low-vision users. The WeWALK smart cane attaches to a standard white cane and uses ultrasonic sensors and a built-in speaker to detect obstacles above knee height (which traditional canes do not detect). It integrates with Google Maps and Apple Maps for turn-by-turn navigation.
