Look around your kitchen and you are probably holding the proof: some of the most popular products of the last forty years started as solutions to a disability problem, then quietly improved life for everyone. Designers have a name for it, the curb-cut effect, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.
The curb that explained everything
The phrase comes from the dropped kerbs at street corners. They were fought for by wheelchair users, and once they existed everyone used them: parents with strollers, travellers with rolling cases, delivery workers with trolleys, anyone on a bike. The lesson stuck. When you design for the people the world usually leaves out, you tend to build something better for the whole crowd.
The peeler that won an art museum
The clearest example sits in millions of drawers. In 1989, Betsey Farber, who had arthritis, found her metal peeler painful to grip. With her husband Sam and the firm Smart Design, she helped create a peeler with a thick, soft, cushioned handle that anyone could hold comfortably. That became OXO Good Grips. The housewares industry was lukewarm at first, then it became a runaway success, won design awards, and landed a place in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection. A tool designed around arthritis turned into the default peeler for a generation of cooks who never thought about why it felt so good in the hand.

Once you start counting, the everyday objects born from disability pile up:
- Voice assistants. Speaking to a device to turn on a light or set a timer was an accessibility feature long before it was a convenience. For many people with mobility or vision disabilities it is still essential infrastructure, not a gadget.
- Audiobooks. They began as talking books for blind and low vision readers, and now they are a multibillion-dollar mainstream habit for commuters and walkers everywhere.
- Captions and subtitles. Built for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, now switched on by a huge share of people watching in noisy rooms, learning a language, or simply preferring to read along.
- The electric toothbrush. Developed with people who have limited hand movement in mind, now a bathroom standard.
- Bendable straws, ergonomic handles, lever door handles, and touchscreens. Each traces back to making something usable for a body that the original design ignored.
- Text messaging. A lifeline for Deaf users that became how the whole world prefers to talk.
None of this is a coincidence. Disability forces a designer to question assumptions that everyone else treats as fixed: that you can grip hard, hear clearly, see fine print, stand steady, move fast. Remove the assumption and the product gets better for people who never had the limitation in the first place.
Why the credit matters
There is a quiet injustice in how this story usually gets told. The product becomes famous, the disability origin gets forgotten, and the community that drove the innovation is treated as a niche afterthought rather than the source. Remembering where these things came from is not nostalgia. It is an argument: designing with people with disabilities is not charity or compliance, it is one of the most reliable ways to make a genuinely good product.
What should be next
The interesting question is what we are still missing. Packaging that opens without a fight. Appliances whose controls are usable without sight. Clothing with closures that do not need two precise hands. Public transport apps that assume a range of bodies and brains, not one. Every one of these is a curb cut waiting to happen, an accessibility fix that would quietly make life easier for everyone.
So the next time someone calls an accessible feature a special accommodation, you can point at the peeler in the drawer. The community has been designing the future for the rest of the world for decades. It would be nice to be asked first.
