Biophilic design is the practice of bringing natural elements into built spaces: light, plants, water, natural materials, views of the outdoors. The evidence behind it is real, and it is uneven. Natural light supports mood and circadian rhythm. A view of greenery is associated with lower pain perception and faster recovery after surgery. Natural materials add sensory variety to a room. One popular claim does not survive checking, and it is the one about air quality. More on that below.
For people with disabilities and people with chronic illness who spend a lot of hours at home, biophilic design isn’t an aesthetic preference. It is one of the few things about a room you can change without changing the room.
And it doesn’t require a renovation or a large outdoor space. It’s one of the most accessible categories of home improvement there is, because so much of it can be done with plants, light management, and material choices rather than structural change.

The research goes back more than 40 years. Roger Ulrich’s 1984 study in Science compared 23 gallbladder-surgery patients in rooms with a window onto trees against 23 matched patients whose window faced a brick wall. The tree-view group had shorter stays after surgery, took fewer strong painkillers, and drew fewer negative comments in nurses’ notes. It is a small, single-hospital study built from records rather than a trial, so treat it as the origin of this field rather than proof of it. The wider picture comes from Twohig-Bennett and Jones’s 2018 meta-analysis of 143 studies covering more than 290 million people, which found statistically significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure, salivary cortisol and heart rate with greenspace exposure. The authors say plainly that a number of their meta-analyses were limited by poor study quality and high heterogeneity.
If getting out of the house is straightforward, nature access is something you move toward: a park walk, a weekend in the country, lunch outside. If it isn’t, nature has to come to you. Indoor substitutes are not equivalent to being outside, and the honest reading of the literature is that they do some of the same work at a smaller size, mostly on mood, stress and pain perception. That is still worth having when the alternative is nothing.
This is relevant for chronic pain specifically. Pain perception is not purely a physical phenomenon; it is modulated by emotional state, attention, and environmental stress. A calmer room does not treat the underlying condition, and nobody should expect it to. What the evidence supports is a modest shift in how pain is experienced, which is a smaller and more honest claim than relief.
Your main spot: make it face something living
Most people with chronic illness or limited mobility have a primary rest spot, a couch, a bed, a chair. This is where you spend the most hours. The immediate environment of this spot has disproportionate influence on your daily experience.
What’s in front of you matters. What’s in your sightline when you look up from a screen or from resting. Positioning your main spot to face a window, or at least a window that can be seen from a seated or lying position, is the single highest-impact biophilic change you can make. If the view out that window includes any greenery, even a single tree, that’s valuable.
If repositioning furniture isn’t possible or the view isn’t green, a large print of a natural scene at eye level from your resting position is the fallback. Images of nature do less than a window does, and less again than being outside, and the studies behind them are mostly short laboratory exposures rather than months of living with the picture. Worth trying. Worth not overselling to yourself.
A plant placed within sightline of your main spot, at a height you can see from where you sit or lie, gives you something living to look at. Choose it for that, not for the air.
Plants: the most accessible biophilic tool
Plants are the simplest and most flexible entry point for biophilic design, and some of them are genuinely low-maintenance enough to suit people with limited energy for plant care.
A few that consistently appear on low-maintenance lists:
Pothos is almost unkillable. It tolerates low light and irregular watering, trails attractively from shelves or hanging positions, and grows quickly enough to be visually satisfying. One of the most recommended plants for people who aren’t confident about plant care.
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, still widely sold as Sansevieria) tolerates very low light and very infrequent watering. Slow-growing, structural, and easy to position. Genuinely requires very little attention.
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas) is drought-tolerant, glossy, and tolerates neglect better than almost anything else. Good choice for people whose energy for plant watering is unpredictable.
Peace lilies tolerate low light reasonably well. They do need more consistent watering than the above, but they tell you when they need it by drooping slightly, easy to monitor.
Herbs on a sunny windowsill are biophilic and practical simultaneously. Basil, mint, and rosemary grow in small containers, smell good, can be used in cooking, and provide the sensory richness of living plants without needing much space.
The key principle: choose plants that match your actual care capacity, not your aspirational care capacity. A plant that dies because it needed more attention than you had isn’t a failure, it was the wrong plant for your situation. Start with the most forgiving options and add more ambitious plants if energy allows.
The air quality claim, and why it is gone from this article
Houseplants are sold on the promise that they clean the air. They do not, at any density a person lives with. A 2019 review in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology re-analyzed 196 experimental results from 12 chamber studies and converted them into clean air delivery rates. The median single-plant rate was 0.023 cubic metres per hour, which the authors calculated would need “the placement of 10 to 1000 plants per square metre of a building’s floor space” to match the removal of volatile organic compounds that ordinary outdoor-to-indoor air exchange already provides in a typical building. The chamber results behind the popular claim are real. They do not scale to a room with air moving through it. Open a window instead, and keep the plants for the thing they do do, which is put something alive in your sightline.
One safety note if you live with an animal
Three of the plants above are on the ASPCA’s list of plants toxic to cats, and so is one of the herbs. Golden pothos and peace lily (Spathiphyllum) carry insoluble calcium oxalates that irritate the mouth and gastrointestinal tract when chewed. Snake plant, listed by the ASPCA under Sansevieria trifasciata, and garden mint (Mentha species) are also on it. Reactions are usually mild, but a service dog or a cat that grazes changes the calculation, and a plant you put on a high shelf is a plant you cannot water. Check the list before you buy rather than after.
Light: the most important variable
Natural light is the highest-value biophilic element for both mood and circadian rhythm. The difference between bright, natural daylight in a room and the same room lit exclusively by artificial light is significant for both wellbeing and sleep quality.
Some things worth trying:
Sheer curtains instead of blackout in living areas. Blackout curtains are valuable in sleeping areas. In living spaces, swapping heavy window coverings for sheers or solar shades that diffuse rather than block daylight maintains privacy while dramatically improving the quality of indoor light.
Maximize morning light exposure. Morning light is particularly important for circadian rhythm regulation. If possible, the part of your home where you spend morning time should have good east-facing light. This matters for sleep quality and for the mood-stabilizing effects of regular light-dark cycle entrainment.
Full-spectrum bulbs in key areas. For spaces where natural light is limited, full-spectrum LED bulbs that better approximate daylight’s colour temperature (5000K-6500K) provide some of the circadian and mood benefits of natural light. Warmer colour temperatures (2700K-3000K) are better for evening use.
Positioning to avoid harsh glare. For people with migraines, light sensitivity, or sensory processing differences, direct sun can be uncomfortable while diffuse daylight is beneficial. Sheers, frosted window film, or strategic positioning of seating to get indirect rather than direct sun gives you the benefits of daylight without the sensory stress of glare.
Natural materials and sensory richness
Biophilic design extends beyond plants and light to the materials in your environment. Wood, stone, wool, linen, cotton, cork, natural materials with varied texture and organic pattern engage the senses in ways that flat, synthetic surfaces don’t.
For people with limited mobility, the tactile and visual richness of natural materials may be particularly relevant: the variety of sensory input that movement through the world usually provides has to be found in the immediate environment.
Some accessible ways to introduce natural materials:
Wooden surfaces, a table, a shelf, even a cutting board, bring warm, varied grain into a space. Unfinished or lightly finished wood is more texturally interesting than high-gloss.
Natural fibre textiles (wool blankets, linen cushions, cotton rugs) add tactile variety and warmth that synthetic materials don’t quite replicate. They’re also more temperature-regulating than polyester.
A stone or clay object, a mug, a small bowl, a plant pot, adds a different sensory character to a space at low cost.
Cork tiles used as a small accent or notice board introduce both texture and a warm, natural colour.
None of these require significant spend or physical effort to implement. They’re small adjustments that add sensory richness to an environment in ways that accumulate into a noticeably different quality of space.
Sound and water
The sound of water, even recorded water sound, has documented stress-reducing effects. For people who can tolerate background sound, nature soundscapes (birdsong, rain, running water) are worth trying as an ambient background during rest or work.
Small indoor fountains are available for modest cost and provide both the sound and visual movement of water in a home environment. For someone spending many hours at home with limited access to outdoor water features, an indoor fountain is a low-effort biophilic investment.
Starting small
The most important principle in biophilic design for adaptive living is that small changes accumulate. You don’t need to redesign a space. You need:
One plant at eye level from your main rest position.
One improvement to your natural light situation.
One natural material in your immediate environment.
These three changes, done thoughtfully, will shift the quality of the space you spend the most time in. Start there, see what you notice, and add more if it helps.
The world is out there. When you can get to it, go. When you can’t, bring as much of it as possible into where you are.
