Steering a Wheelchair With Your Eyes: What Apple Actually Announced

In May 2026, Apple previewed a feature that sounds like science fiction: drive a power wheelchair using nothing but your eyes. The demo videos are clean. The headlines wrote themselves. And the gap between what was announced and what you can actually use today is wide enough to deserve a plain-language explanation.

So here is the honest version.

What the feature does

Apple Vision Pro has precise eye tracking built in. The new feature uses that tracking to send drive commands to a compatible power wheelchair. You look where you want to go, and the chair moves. You stop or pause with your eyes as well. Apple says the tracking does not need frequent recalibration and works in a variety of lighting conditions. Read the footnote before you get excited about that, though: Apple also states that the feature and Vision Pro itself are “intended for use in controlled environments.” That is a meaningful limit on a device you would be steering with, and it is not the same as a system proven on a bumpy sidewalk in February.

At launch it works with two alternative drive systems: Tolt and LUCI. Both already exist as add-on control and safety platforms for power chairs. Apple says the feature launches with those two systems in the United States, which is the detail most coverage skipped and the one that matters most here. The connection supports Bluetooth and wired, and a wired connection requires buying Apple’s Vision Pro Developer Strap on top of everything else. Apple says it will keep working with developers to add more drive systems over time.

That is the real boundary. This is not a feature that turns any wheelchair into an eye-driven one. It works with specific hardware, on a headset that starts around 3,500 US dollars before you add the chair, the drive system, and the fitting. For now it is a capability for a small number of people with the right equipment and the budget to assemble it.

Why it still matters

Strip away the headset price for a moment. The principle underneath this is worth paying attention to.

For people who cannot use a joystick, sip-and-puff systems and head arrays have been the main alternatives for years. They work, but they ask the body to do something specific and repeatable, and not everyone can. Eye control is a different input path. It opens driving to people whose reliable, repeatable movement is in their eyes and not their hands, head, or breath. That is a real expansion of who gets to move independently, not a gadget.

The other piece is recalibration. Anyone who has used eye-tracking communication devices knows the frustration: the system drifts, you stop to recalibrate, you lose the thread of what you were doing. Apple claiming stable tracking without frequent recalibration is the part worth testing in the wild. If it holds, that is the difference between a demo and a tool.

The rest of the announcement is closer to your hands

The wheelchair feature got the headlines. The updates most readers will actually touch this year are the ones coming to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac you already own.

Apple is adding on-device subtitles that generate automatically for video that was never captioned. The processing happens on the device, so the audio does not leave your phone. Apple says generated subtitles arrive in English in the United States and Canada, so this one does reach Canadian users, and the Voice Control upgrades cover Canada too. For Deaf and hard-of-hearing users, automatic captions on the random uncaptioned video are a steady, everyday access win, not a flashy one.

VoiceOver is getting an Image Explorer that uses on-device intelligence to describe photos, scanned documents, and other visual content in more detail. Magnifier, Voice Control, and the Accessibility Reader are all getting upgrades from the same engine. And visionOS is adding Vehicle Motion Cues, which can cut the motion sickness some people feel using a headset as a passenger in a moving vehicle.

None of these need a 3,500 dollar headset. Most arrive as a free software update later this year on hardware you already have. That is where the practical value sits for most people reading this.

The honest caveats

A preview is a promise, not a product. Apple said these features are “coming later this year,” which means the eye-control demo you saw is not something you can buy and fit this week. Compatibility is narrow at launch. Eye-tracking drive systems will need real-world testing by actual wheelchair users across fatigue, glare, bumpy ground, and the ordinary chaos of a day before anyone should call them proven.

There is also a privacy question worth holding onto. Eye-tracking data is sensitive. It can reveal a great deal about a person. Apple’s on-device processing approach is the right instinct, but it is worth watching how that data is handled as more drive systems and developers join in.

What this means in Canada

If you are a power chair user in Canada wondering whether this changes anything for you soon, the answer is: watch, do not budget for it yet. None of this is funded equipment here. Provincial assistive devices programs, the Saskatchewan Aids to Independent Living program, Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program, and the rest move slowly and do not cover consumer headsets or the newest drive systems. A feature being announced by Apple in California is a long way from a line item a Canadian program will pay for.

What is worth doing now is naming it. When access programs, clinicians, and funders say eye-controlled driving is not realistic, that claim is getting weaker by the year. The technology is arriving. The barrier is becoming funding and policy, not capability. That is a barrier we can actually push on.

For now, the smart move is simple. Update your devices when the free accessibility features ship, use the ones that help, and keep an eye on the eye-control work without paying early-adopter prices for a first-generation promise.
